About Elephant Garlic…
AVAILABLE FALL 2023
For the garlic snobs among us, we are quick to point out that Elephant Garlic is actually a member of the Leek family but it still has it place in our collection, if for no other reason the beautiful purple scape “flower” if allowed to mature on the plant. Simply HUGE bulbs and cloves, often with as few as 4 bulbs per pound. In a typical year about 25% of what we plant ends up “going round” and not forming a cloved bulb. We keep these “rounds” (also called solos), plant them again in the fall and they will form normal bulbs in their 2nd year. Most bulbs have 5-7 cloves with 3-5 huge cloves. Plants are stocky and large, therefore we provide more space between plants when planting in the fall.
